How to Compare Car Hire in Australia

Comparing car hire isn’t just about the daily rate. A clear checklist helps you avoid surprises and pick the option that best fits your trip.

Total cost, not just daily rate

Include all mandatory charges: rental fee, fees for the pickup location (e.g. airport), any required insurance or reduction products, and taxes. Optional extras (GPS, extra driver, child seat) add up—only include them if you need them.

Fuel policy

“Full-to-full” means you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. That’s usually the fairest and often the cheapest. “Pre-purchase fuel” can be convenient but is often more expensive per litre than filling up yourself before return.

Excess and damage

The excess is the amount you’re liable for if the car is damaged or stolen. It can be several thousand dollars. Many providers sell excess reduction or zero-excess options. Check whether your travel insurance or credit card already covers rental excess before buying theirs.

Pickup and return

Compare the same pickup and return locations. Airport locations are convenient but often cost more. City and suburban branches can be cheaper; check opening hours and whether they suit your flight times.

Compare providers by location

Use our locations and city pages to see businesses in your area. You can then contact them or visit their sites to get like-for-like quotes for your dates and vehicle type.
