Car Hire Fuel Policies in Australia: Compare Your Options

The right car hire fuel policy in Australia depends on how much you expect to drive and how easily you can refuel before returning. Compare the amount you will actually pay, the fuel you expect to use and the time available on your final day.

Start with the policy attached to your quote. A low daily rental price does not tell you whether fuel is prepaid, whether you must refill the tank or how the provider calculates a shortfall.

Understand the three options before choosing

Refuel the car yourself

With a full-to-full arrangement, you collect a full tank and return it full. If the agreement instead requires the same level as collection, check that the starting level is recorded accurately. Photograph the gauge while parked and ask the branch to correct any discrepancy before leaving.

Prepay for fuel

A prepaid option lets you pay for fuel at collection under the provider's conditions. Ask how many litres you are buying, the total charge and whether unused fuel receives any credit. Paying for a full tank can be poor value on a short trip if much of it remains unused and no credit applies.

Let the provider refuel on return

Check the stated fuel rate and any separate service charge. This can be convenient when a refuelling stop does not fit your itinerary, but include the likely charge in your comparison.

As one Australian provider example, Budget's vehicles and driving FAQ describes prepaid fuel, DIY refuelling and pay-on-return options. It notes that its return refuelling price may exceed local pump prices. Confirm the available options and amounts on your own rental agreement.

Compare costs using your expected fuel use

Use this calculation for a rough planning estimate: distance in kilometres multiplied by estimated consumption in litres per 100 kilometres, divided by 100. Actual consumption varies with the vehicle, traffic, load and driving conditions.

For an illustrative 300-kilometre trip at 7 litres per 100 kilometres, expected use is 21 litres. At an invented pump price of A$2 per litre, replacing that fuel costs about A$42. If a hypothetical prepaid tank costs A$100 with no unused-fuel credit, the convenience costs A$58 more in this example. These figures are calculation inputs, not current fuel prices or rental offers.

For a longer journey, include intermediate fuel purchases in both options. Prepaying the starting tank does not cover every subsequent fill. Our kilometre allowance guide helps you compare the separate distance component of your quote.

Make a return-day refuelling plan

  • Confirm the required fuel type with the branch and vehicle label.
  • Choose a suitable station on the route to the actual return entrance.
  • Check opening hours for your planned return time and identify a backup.
  • Allow time for the stop, the vehicle handover and any airport transfer.
  • Keep the receipt and photograph the gauge and odometer once safely parked at return.

For an early departure, check the after-hours return checklist as well. Do not plan to run the tank dry to maximise a prepaid purchase; leave enough fuel to complete the journey safely.

Keep records until you have checked the final invoice

Compare the fuel line on the invoice with the option you selected. If something does not match, contact the provider with your agreement number, receipt and return records. Avis Australia's customer service FAQ, for example, asks customers querying a refuelling charge to provide a rental or reservation number and a dated, timestamped fuel receipt. Documentation helps explain what happened; it does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Is full-to-full always the cheapest option?

No. Compare your expected fuel use, the quoted alternatives and the practicality of a refuelling stop. There is no single cheapest policy for every trip.

Will I receive a refund for unused prepaid fuel?

Ask before selecting the option. Include any no-credit condition in your cost comparison instead of assuming the unused amount will be refunded.

Should I keep my fuel receipt?

Yes. Keep it with your collection and return records until you have reviewed the final invoice and resolved any questions.

Does the same policy apply to an electric hire car?

Check its separate charging conditions. Our electric car return guide covers the questions to ask about battery levels and charging arrangements.
