Additional Driver Car Hire in Australia: Booking Checklist
Sharing the driving can make an Australian road trip easier, but handing over the keys is not the same as adding a driver to your rental. Before booking car hire with an additional driver, confirm who can drive, how the provider approves them and what the full booking will cost.
This checklist is for couples, friends and families comparing rentals. It does not assume every company has the same rules or that a second driver is automatically included.
Confirm the approval process before anyone else drives
Ask the rental company how it records an additional driver and when approval takes effect. For example, Avis Australia's reservations FAQ says that only people named on the rental agreement may drive its vehicles. Check the equivalent requirement with your chosen provider.
If a booking website lets you select an extra driver, ask whether that selection completes registration or only adds a request. At collection, check the agreement and resolve any missing driver details with the branch before leaving.
Do not assume a partner is automatically approved
A fee inclusion and permission to drive are different questions. Even if your quote includes a second driver at no extra charge, confirm the eligibility checks and registration steps. Describe your booking accurately when asking about any partner, membership or corporate-rate inclusion.
Check each driver's eligibility separately
Send the provider the relevant details for each person: age, licence type, issuing country and how long they have held it. Ask what original documents they must bring and whether any translation is required. Check the rules for the vehicle class you actually intend to hire.
- Must both drivers attend the collection branch together?
- Which licence and identification documents does each person need?
- Does either driver's age or licence restrict the vehicle choice?
- Can the second driver join later, and where must registration happen?
- Will adding a driver change any quoted charges or rental conditions?
For younger travellers, our young driver car hire guide covers additional booking questions. Eligibility should be confirmed for every driver, even when the main renter meets the requirements.
Compare the total quote with both drivers included
Request an itemised quote for your dates, branch, car category and named drivers. Ask whether the additional-driver charge is daily or per rental, whether a cap applies, and whether the amount includes applicable taxes and location charges. Avoid comparing a one-driver headline price with a quote that already includes two.
A simple quote comparison
Imagine two hypothetical five-day quotes. Quote A totals A$300 before a second driver and adds A$10 per day for that driver. Quote B totals A$335 with the second driver included. With all other costs and conditions assumed equal, A totals A$350, so B is A$15 lower. These are illustrative numbers, not advertised rates.
The cheaper total only helps if the pickup arrangements work. If one traveller lands later, factor in the time and transport needed to register them. Use our car hire comparison guide to check the rest of the quote on the same basis.
Plan for different arrival times or a mid-trip change
Suppose you collect the car in the morning and your friend arrives that evening. Before booking, ask whether the friend must visit a staffed branch and whether your presence is required. Get the agreed process in writing; do not plan on an email or online request being sufficient unless the provider confirms it.
If plans change during the rental, contact the provider before the new person drives. Ask when any amended charge starts and request the updated rental record. Keep that confirmation with the original agreement.
Make collection a short document check
At pickup, check each approved driver's details, the itemised price and any recorded restrictions. Ask staff to explain anything that differs from the booking confirmation. Save a copy that both travellers can access, along with the branch's contact details.
For a longer itinerary, also compare the kilometre allowance. Sharing the driving does not change the distance allowance or the agreed return time.
Find a provider that fits your travel party
Browse Australian car hire locations, then request a quote covering every intended driver. Confirm the total cost and the registration arrangement before committing, especially when travellers will collect the car at different times.
Frequently asked questions
Is an additional driver always included for free?
No single inclusion applies to every rental. Ask for a quote with your intended drivers and confirm any conditions attached to an included driver.
Can my partner drive if I made the booking?
Confirm the provider's approval process first. A personal relationship does not tell you whether that person has been authorised under your booking.
Can I add another driver after collecting the car?
Ask the provider whether it permits this and what branch visit or paperwork is required. Complete the approved process before that person drives.
Does the second driver need to be at pickup?
Check with the collection branch before booking. If you arrive separately, agree how and when the second driver's documents will be checked.
